and Belgium, this region
like Alsace has
a Germanic influence, though not as strong. It also has been an area of
constant dispute between France
and Germany.
In the north, the landscape is agricultural as well as industrial with
vineyards and coalfields such as the Saar. In
this area, Verdun
saw the heavy fighting of the Great War and the battlefields, town and
memorials are there to visit. Metz, the regions
capital city is Gallo-Roman, whereas Nancy,
the regions previous capital city is renowned for the Art Nouveau features. The
Moselle river lends itself up to the usual
water sports of sailing, canoeing and canal boating with beautiful towns and
medieval fortresses dotted along its banks. Towards the south, the region is
divided from Alsace by the Vosges
mountains, meaning that it benefits from spa towns such as that of Vittel,
which is also famous for its mineral water. This area is good for hiking, rock
climbing and pony trekking. Moselle
