With the
large port of Calais being in this region, for many it
is the start of their holiday, but instead of just passing through it is worth
seeing just what it has to offer. Its location means that this region has been
fought over throughout history and occupied by many different races and
nationalities, giving its towns and cities a distinctly cosmopolitan feel as
well as a diverse array of architecture. With industry and population being
concentrated around the main towns including Boulogne-sur-Mer, Arras
and Calais (all
well worth a visit), the rest of the region is left to the coast, countryside
and nature including 3 National Parks. Sporting activites include hiking,
cycling, canal activities, golf, kite surfing, wind surfing and various other
water sports. Lille,
the capital city of the region was designated a European Culture Capital in
2004 due to its well-preserved heritage and is full on historical sights to
visit with the Citadel and Veille Bourse being two key sights. Specialities of
this region include, Bergues cheese, Carbonade Flamande, Potjevleesch (a 3 meat
terrine), Coq à la bière, La Goulade beer (just one of many in this ‘beer
region’) and Genever gin.
